Stevie Ray Vai

  • Musical Background:   I grew up in a musical family. My parents were both musicians. My mom taught in the public school systems, and my Dad was the head of the Music department at UW Stout in Wisconsin. I was formally trained on Piano and Trombone, but I realized that playing trombone in the local band was definitely not the way to get the chics, so I started learning guitar. Through out high school I played in a number of different bands. I went on to college for Electrical Engineering at Michigan Technological University, but continued playing in different bands to help pay my way. After college, I ended up in the Detroit area. I played for a number of years in the Detroit music scene until the demands of my "Real Job" and family life pulled me away from music. Eventually we moved back to the Twin Cites area, and I got the opportunity to start playing again by doing some recording work with a few local musicians I knew. I really missed playing live though, so I started looking for a good band to hook up with. I finally landed here with RIS.

  • Gear:  Most of my stuff is custom built or modified so it is kind of hard to say exactly what it is, but I mainly play Ibanez 550/570/JEM style guitars, I also play a custom built Kramer Nightswan that has a similar pickup setup to the Ibanez guitars. My current amp is a modified Peavey 6505 +. I have a couple different speaker cabs(Marshall 4X12, Tube works 2X12, and Alesis 2X12) loaded with Celestion Greenbacks, and Vintage 30's. For effects I use a T.C. Electronics G-major, and also an Alesis Midi Verb IV for some reverb effects. On the floor I have a Buddah Wah pedal, and a MIDI controller for changing patches on the effects unit and switching channels on the amp. Actually a pretty simple set up.

  • Influences:  I listened to a wide variety of music, and started off on classical piano, but Van Halen really got me interested in guitar, also Rush, and Boston (Tom Scholz).
